Bite Problems

There are several types of bite problems that range from misaligned jaws to crooked and impacted teeth. It is essential to correct any improper bites (malocclusions) to help prevent gum disease, tooth decay, chewing problems, speech impediments, jaw joint pain and headaches. In addition to the cosmetic benefits, fixing an improper bite can also help improve your oral and overall health.

The following are types of bite problems:

Crowding – When there’s not enough space in the mouth for teeth. As a result, teeth will overlap, be displaced or bunch together.
Spacing – A gap between teeth as a result of an excess of available space in the mouth.
Overbite – Significant overlap of upper teeth over lower teeth.
Overjet – How much the upper teeth extend over lower teeth.
Open Bite – When upper and lower teeth do not touch each other and are forced outwards.
Crossbite/Underbite – Occurs in the back or front of the mouth when there is not proper jaw alignment whereby upper teeth sit on the inside of lower teeth.
Impacted Teeth – A tooth that is stuck in bone or gum tissue and isn’t able to fully push through the into the mouth.
Missing Teeth – A person may have been born without a tooth or the tooth has been extracted. Missing teeth impact proper functioning of the bite, cause premature wear and can cause further alignment issues.

Early Bite Problems (may require Phase I treatment from ages 7-10):

Severe Incisor Crowding
– Crowding of the any of the four upper or lower front teeth.
Crossbite/Underbite – Occurs in the back or front of the mouth when there is not proper jaw alignment whereby upper teeth sit on the inside of lower teeth.
Impacted Tooth/Incisor – When any of the four upper or lower front teeth are not able to push through the gum into the mouth.
Open Bite Due To Habit (Thumb Sucking) – Often caused by the patient from habits, such as thumb sucking and tongue thrusting, whereby the front teeth flare out.
